Trapani was founded by the Elymiotes and then conquered by the Phoenicians who turned it into an important port. According to mythology, Trapani was created when the Goddess Dimitra was wandering around Sicily in search of her lost daughter Persephone and a giant sickle (hence the origin of the city's name "drepanon" from ancient Greek) fell from her chariot. When the sickle landed, a tongue of land was formed where the city of Trapani was to be founded.
