Travelling with the ferry Fethiye, visitors arrive at the ancient city of Telmessos, the ruins of which can be seen in the city. Later known as Makre or Makri (means "long one"), from the name of the island at the entrance to the harbour, modern Fethiye is now one of Turkey's well-known tourist centres. It is  a city and district of Muğla Province in the Aegean region of Turkey with about 146,000 inhabitants. The British Times newspaper once chose Fethiye - Ölüdeniz  as the best tourism centre in the world.
